Chapter 20

Evelyn had nothing more to add after hearing Nathan's words. With a dismissive wave, she conceded, "Fine, you're the majority shareholder. Your word is final here."

She turned on her heel, her professional smile instantly returning as she addressed the clients. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you'll follow me to our VIP lounge, we can discuss the compensation details."

The group nodded and trailed after Evelyn into the private room.

Vivian's lips curled in secret satisfaction as she witnessed Nathan defending her position.

'Just as I thought - I'm still Nathan's favorite.'

"Nathan, I had no idea things would escalate like this," Vivian said with practiced remorse, her eyes downcast in contrition. "I'll be more careful in the future."

Nathan's gaze flickered over her briefly. "You're inexperienced with market dynamics. Leave these matters to Evelyn moving forward." With that, he strode away with Oliver in tow.

Vivian's manicured nails bit into her palms as she lowered her head.

'Evelyn, Evelyn, Evelyn!'

'Not only did this backfire, but now I have to defer to her? I'm the legitimate director of Viana Jewelry!'

Inside the VIP suite, Evelyn had staff bring out authentic versions of the disputed pieces. "As our apology, please accept these complimentary replacements," she said, arranging them on the conference table. "All refunds have been processed through your original payment platforms and should reflect shortly. We deeply regret today's incident."

She rose and bowed formally.

The lead client chuckled, waving a hand. "No need for such formality. We understand the situation now, and your explanation was thorough. Consider the matter closed."

"Thank you for your understanding, madam." Evelyn personally escorted them to the elevator, watching as the satisfied group departed.

Her buoyant mood evaporated the moment the elevator doors reopened on her floor. Nathan stood waiting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his silhouette stark against the cityscape.

"Mr. Goldmann," she said coolly, "you do realize this isn't Vivian's floor?"

"I was waiting for you." He turned slowly, his piercing gaze locking onto hers.

Evelyn forced a tight smile as she approached. "To what do I owe this honor? More grievances about your precious Vivian?"

"Must you always take that tone with me?" His voice carried an edge of irritation.

"It's who I am." She shrugged nonchalantly.

Nathan's lips thinned into a displeased line.

'She's perfectly cordial with everyone else. Only with me does she turn into this prickly creature.'

"Does it bother you that I defended Vivian today?"

Evelyn blinked in genuine surprise.

'What?'

Nathan's gaze turned knowing. "Your rivalry with Vivian is no secret. I'm aware you resent her for inheriting your mother's company."

He closed the distance between them deliberately. "You should practice forgiveness. She's never once complained about what you did to her six years ago."

"And what exactly did I do?" Evelyn's sudden laugh held no warmth. "So in your narrative, Vivian's the victim?"

Nathan's brow furrowed slightly but he remained silent.

The mirth drained from Evelyn's face. "Of course. She's always the poor, misunderstood one. Even my father falls for her damsel act - why wouldn't you?"

"Evelyn Vander—"

"Mr. Goldmann," she cut him off flatly, "you know nothing of my experiences, so you have no right to judge. Whatever fairy tales Vivian has spun for you, I'll say this with absolute certainty - I was the one wronged six years ago."

Without waiting for a response, she turned and strode into her office, the door clicking shut with finality behind her.
