Chapter 33

If he truly was the man from six years ago…

Evelyn’s gaze turned icy. Vivian had orchestrated everything that night—the night she had been ruined. She had even brought in that man. But if Nathan was the one Vivian had hired to destroy her, he would have known who she was.

Besides, Evelyn refused to believe Vivian would send a man like him to her bed. A man like Nathan Goldmann? Vivian would have kept him for herself.

Sophia nudged her. "Zoe, don’t you think so?"

Evelyn scoffed. "Even if it was him, do you really think a man Vivian used would be worthy of being my children’s father?"

Sophia blinked, speechless. Only Evelyn would dare to imply that Nathan Goldmann wasn’t good enough.

Evelyn’s phone buzzed.

Seeing Caleb’s name, she excused herself and stepped into the hallway. "Caleb?"

"Mommy, Liam asked if we should save you some dinner in case you get hungry after the party."

A warmth spread through her chest. "I’m on my way home. Wait for me."

She turned—and froze.

Nathan stood behind her, his expression unreadable. How long had he been there? Had he heard?

"Your boyfriend calling you home already?" His voice was cool.

Evelyn shrugged. "Can’t blame him for worrying."

She remembered his jacket and quickly shrugged it off, handing it back. "Thanks for this."

Nathan didn’t take it. Instead, he said, "I’ll drive you."

He wanted to see this man for himself.

Evelyn’s lips parted in surprise. "Excuse me?"

"Is there a problem?"

"No, but I wouldn’t want to trouble you. The person waiting for me might get jealous." She shoved the jacket into his arms and turned to leave.

Nathan blocked her path. "You don’t want to trouble me, or you don’t want me to see who’s waiting?"

Evelyn smirked. "Mr. Goldmann, I’m flattered by your sudden concern."

"Concern?" His eyes darkened. "Don’t flatter yourself."

As if he’d ever be concerned about her.

Evelyn stepped closer, tilting her head. "No? You have a girlfriend, yet you’re insisting on driving another woman home. People might get the wrong idea."

Nathan’s jaw tightened, but before he could respond, Adrian appeared, smiling. "Leaving so soon?"

Evelyn nodded. "Someone’s waiting for me."

Adrian’s smile was warm. "Let me arrange a car for you. It’s not safe for a woman to go alone at night."

She opened her mouth to accept—but Nathan cut in. "I’ll take her."

Without waiting for a response, he gripped Evelyn’s wrist and pulled her toward the exit.

Adrian watched them go, his lips curving in amusement.

Nathan’s behavior toward Evelyn was… unexpected.

Outside, Evelyn yanked her arm free. "Mr. Goldmann, what part of no don’t you understand?"
