Chapter 449
Evelyn’s fingers tightened around each other as she turned to face Nathan, who seemed lost in thought.
"How do we explain to the kids that we’re getting a divorce?"
Nathan stiffened slightly, his gaze darkening. "We’ll figure it out when the time comes."
Even if they end up hating me.
Evelyn studied him for a long moment before speaking slowly. "Is there really no other way?"
"Do we have to go through with this?"
Silence.
Her hands clenched into fists. "At least tell me why you want this."
Nathan’s brow furrowed, irritation flashing in his eyes. "I’ve said all I need to say."
Of course. He won’t give me a straight answer.
A bitter laugh escaped her lips.
If he won’t tell me why, then I won’t agree to it.
Nathan caught the flicker of hurt in her expression, and something deep inside him twisted. His jaw tightened.
She’s hurting.
But so am I.
The children were overjoyed when their parents returned. After so long apart, they clung to Evelyn more than ever.
Daisy nestled in her arms, big eyes pleading. "Mommy, can we go to Grandpa’s house to see Rusty? We miss him so much!"
Caleb munched on chips. "And Grandpa’s banana bread. I really want some."
Liam closed his book with a sigh. "All you ever think about is food."
Caleb grinned. "Eating is happiness, Liam."
Evelyn chuckled. "Alright, we’ll go tomorrow."
Liam tilted his head. "Mommy, aren’t you busy?"
Her breath hitched—just as Nathan’s gaze locked onto hers. She quickly looked away. "Not at all. Uncle Gregory is handling things at the company."
Daisy turned to Nathan. "What about Daddy?"
His lips thinned. "I’m free too."
Evelyn barely glanced at him.
If he wants to spend time with them… maybe I can change his mind before it’s too late.
Since Rosalind had been banished from the Goldmann mansion, the children had grown more comfortable there.
Tonight was the first time Evelyn had stayed in months.
Lying on the bed, she scrolled through her phone, searching for ways to make Nathan reconsider.
Netizen1: If he wants a divorce, he’s already fallen out of love. No amount of begging will help.
Netizen2: Why bother? Move on and find someone better.
Netizen3: Either he finds you unattractive now, or there’s someone else. Watch out.
Evelyn groaned, tossing her phone aside.
I’d rather believe it’s me. Maybe he just… doesn’t want me anymore.
The memory of his cold indifference at the office made her chest ache.
The door creaked open.
Nathan stepped inside, freezing when he saw her.
The silk nightgown clung to her curves, the strap slipping off one shoulder. Her curls spilled across the pillow as she absently tucked a strand behind her ear, legs swaying slightly.
His blood burned.
Evelyn startled when she noticed him. "How long have you been standing there?"
Please tell me he didn’t see what I was reading.
Nathan turned away abruptly. "I’m taking a shower."
Without another word, he disappeared into the bathroom.
