Chapter 468

"Don't you have work today?" Evelyn asked, eyeing her best friend skeptically.

Sophia waved her hand dismissively. "I can take unpaid leave. A few days without pay won't kill me."

Evelyn picked up her coffee cup, but the moment the bitter liquid touched her tongue, a wave of nausea hit her. She barely had time to set the cup down before rushing to the bathroom.

"Zoe?" Sophia jumped up from her seat.

Evelyn barely made it to the stall before emptying the contents of her stomach into the toilet.

"Zoe, are you okay?" Sophia's concerned voice came from outside the stall.

When Sophia saw her vomiting, realization dawned on her face. "Zoe, are you...?"

Evelyn froze mid-retch. The nausea, loss of appetite, missed period—it all clicked into place. No. This couldn't be happening.

Flushing the toilet, Evelyn emerged pale-faced, one hand instinctively cradling her stomach.

Sophia looked genuinely worried. "Should we go to the hospital? Just to be sure?"

Evelyn didn't object. If she really was pregnant... Nathan wanted a divorce. What would that mean for their child?

At the hospital, Sophia stayed by Evelyn's side through every test. The results confirmed their suspicions—Evelyn was pregnant.

The doctor slid the report across his desk while typing into his computer. "You're five weeks along. Avoid stress—it could lead to complications. And I'd recommend separate sleeping arrangements for now."

Evelyn's hand trembled against her stomach as she took the report. She thanked the doctor numbly before walking out.

Sophia followed, her expression sympathetic. "Nathan files for divorce, and now this. The universe has a sick sense of humor."

Evelyn's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Tell me about it."

Pregnant right as their marriage was ending. Would Nathan change his mind if he knew?

In the hospital lobby, breaking news flashed across the wall-mounted screen: "Shocking development! Nathan Goldmann and Evelyn Vanderbilt announce divorce proceedings."

Evelyn's blood ran cold. The color drained from her face as the words sank in.

He'd gone public with their divorce. Nathan was forcing her hand.

Sophia gasped, but before she could speak, Evelyn was already rushing toward the exit.

"Zoe!" Sophia called after her, but Evelyn had already hailed a cab.

Sophia quickly dialed Adrian Boucher—if anyone could help, it was him.

Through the taxi window, Evelyn watched the city blur through her tears. She muffled her sobs with one hand, her other protectively covering her still-flat stomach.

Sophia's calls went unanswered. Evelyn needed to see Nathan—to confront him about this cruelty.

Dark clouds gathered as the cab pulled up to the Goldmann estate. Evelyn barely waited for it to stop before throwing open the door.

But at the gates, security blocked her path. "Ma'am, I'm sorry—you can't enter."

"I need to see Nathan. Move!" Evelyn tried to push past them.

The guards held firm. "I knew you'd come," a familiar voice said.

Theodore Goldmann approached, his expression unreadable. "Nathan won't see you. It's over—accept it."
