Chapter 139
A satisfied smile curved Evelyn's lips as she stepped out of the police station.
Finally, Victoria would face justice for her crimes.
If Sophia's blood was found on that earring, Victoria would have no defense left.
Evelyn waited anxiously for updates, but two days passed with no news.
Unable to wait any longer, she returned to the station—only to collide with Victoria and Alexander at the entrance.
Standing beneath her umbrella in the pouring rain, Evelyn couldn't make out their faces clearly. But Victoria's voice carried sharply through the downpour.
"Alexander, why won't Evelyn stop tormenting me? Does she want me dead?" Victoria gasped dramatically when she noticed Evelyn. "Eve?"
Blinking against the rain, Evelyn barely discerned Victoria's approaching figure.
"Eve, what will it take for you to leave me alone? How could you accuse me of killing Sophia? She was my best friend! The blood on those earrings means nothing—I gave them to her!" Victoria's voice trembled with theatrical sobs.
Evelyn's smile remained icy. "You murdered Sophia. Do you think these pathetic lies will save you? Victoria, the law always catches up. The truth will come out."
"Eve, you—"
"Save your tears and acting. They don't work on me. Even blind, I can see the ugliness in your heart."
"Enough!"
Alexander's furious roar cut through the rain.
Evelyn's grip tightened on her umbrella as her heart stuttered.
She lifted her chin, her clouded eyes staring blankly ahead.
Through the rain's haze, her remaining vision caught glimpses of Alexander's handsome face twisted in anger.
He stepped between them, shielding Victoria.
"Evelyn, how many warnings must I give you? Must I teach you another lesson?" His voice dripped with barely contained rage.
Though her vision blurred, Evelyn could perfectly imagine Victoria's smug smirk and Alexander's cold glare.
She laughed bitterly. "Mr. Blackwood, we both know who's tormenting whom here."
Victoria's voice turned saccharine. "Eve, I finally understand. You only pretended to be my sister to get close to Alexander. How foolish I was. But please, don't hurt those I love because of your jealousy."
Alexander immediately softened, pulling Victoria close. "Don't worry, darling. As my future wife, I'll always protect you. That's a promise I'll never break."
"Oh, Alexander..."
Evelyn scoffed, bitterness rising like bile in her throat.
Alexander's icy gaze burned into her. When he realized she wasn't looking at him, his jaw clenched. "Evelyn, the divorce papers are ready. You have twenty-four hours to sign them."
Raindrops pelted her umbrella like shards of glass piercing her heart. "I told you, Alexander. I'll never agree to divorce you. That two-faced witch will never take my place while I live!"
"That's not your decision!" he snapped. Something twisted in his chest when her vacant stare missed his glare. Taking Victoria's hand, he deliberately shouldered past Evelyn.
The impact sent Evelyn sprawling onto the wet pavement. Her umbrella skittered away as rain soaked through her clothes.
Pale and shaking, she groped blindly for her umbrella.
As Alexander started the car, an inexplicable urge made him glance at the rearview mirror.
