Chapter 150

Alexander's heart constricted with unbearable pain. His eyes widened so dramatically they threatened to pop from their sockets. "What do you mean you did everything you could?" His voice cracked. Those were the most terrifying words any family member could hear.

The attending physician sighed heavily. "Frankly, it's miraculous the patient survived this long. My deepest sympathies."

Alexander refused to accept this outcome.

He needed Evelyn to be breathing.

He needed her alive so he could finally reveal the truth.

"I treated this patient three years ago," a female doctor interjected. "She was pregnant then. I advised terminating the pregnancy for her health, but she refused. That child clearly meant more to her than her own life. Now that she's gone, perhaps the child's survival is some small consolation."

Alexander felt the air leave his lungs.

That child.

He'd personally crushed that innocent life to dust.

Their own flesh and blood, destroyed by its father's hands.

The pain in his chest became unbearable, threatening to drive him mad.

He sprinted to the operating theater where Evelyn still lay on the table.

Each step toward her felt heavier than the last.

When he finally reached her, she might as well have been on another continent.

Her porcelain skin had lost all color. No breath stirred her lips. No heartbeat animated her chest. She resembled a broken doll, forever asleep.

"Evelyn..."

His whisper trembled through the sterile air. No response would ever come.

Those hopeful eyes would never gaze at him again.

Something inside him shattered beyond repair.

Victoria entered with barely concealed triumph. Spotting Evelyn's lifeless form, her lips twitched upward before schooling into perfect grief.

"Alexander," she sniffled, "Evelyn must have been ill for years. She probably didn't want you to see her like this. Let her rest in peace. We should go home."

She reached for his arm, but an arctic chill stopped her.

"Alexander?" she ventured.

His gaze turned murderous.

"Did you arrange for her blindness?"

Victoria's eyelashes fluttered innocently. "Alexander, how could you think that? I'd never be so cruel! Was Evelyn blind? How—"

His pupils contracted as he studied her face for tells.

"You'd better be completely ignorant about this."

Victoria's blood ran cold at his tone.

"Alexander, you know I could never—"

"Get out."

"But—"

"Everyone out! NOW!"
