Chapter 283

Nathaniel had tracked down Evelyn's location. When he arrived to check on her, the sight before him was completely unexpected.

"Evelyn!"

His pulse skyrocketed. Without hesitation, he sprinted toward the elevator, determined to follow the vehicle that had taken her.

The black sedan was speeding recklessly, blowing through red lights. Nathaniel matched its dangerous pace, unwilling to lose sight of it. Then two schoolgirls stepped into the crosswalk.

He slammed the brakes.

The tires screeched as he narrowly avoided catastrophe. But in that split second, the getaway car vanished.

His hands trembled as he dialed 911. Then he pulled every string he could to access traffic camera footage.

Three years ago, he'd failed her. Not this time.

'Evelyn, hold on.'

'I swear I'll bring you home safely.'

Willowbrook General Hospital

Victoria lounged casually on her hospital bed, the heavy leg casts and bandages doing nothing to hinder her movements. She'd just returned from the restroom with perfect ease.

Margaret peeked through the door's window before locking it. "They just called," she whispered, a wicked gleam in her eyes. "Everything went exactly as you planned."

Victoria smirked, examining her manicure. "All that arrogance for nothing. She's completely at my mercy now."

"Of course, darling. That nobody could never compare to you." Margaret's greedy smile widened. "Don't forget our arrangement about the money—"

She suddenly stiffened, spotting movement through the glass. "Alexander's coming!"

Victoria instantly transformed—her posture slumped, eyes welling with tears. Margaret rushed to her side, conjuring fake sobs.

"Please darling, don't say such things! Alexander would never abandon you, no matter what!" Margaret wailed dramatically as the door opened.

Alexander's brow furrowed at the scene.

Margaret threw herself at him, face contorted in fake anguish. "Thank God you're here! She's talking about giving up—her face, her legs... I don't know how to comfort her anymore!"
