Chapter 338
Alexander lifted his gaze just in time to see Evelyn flag down a taxi. Without hesitation, she slipped inside and disappeared down the street.
For a brief moment, his chest tightened. Then, he sprang into action, chasing after her.
His fingers flew across his phone screen, dialing her number. The call connected, but she didn’t answer.
Evelyn glanced at the darkened screen, a smirk playing on her lips.
This was all part of the game.
That sweet farewell she’d given him? A lie. She had no intention of letting the two people she despised most live happily ever after.
When Alexander couldn’t reach her, panic set in.
He didn’t care about the reasons—he just knew he couldn’t lose the woman who bore Evelyn’s face.
Even as he stubbornly clung to that excuse, he couldn’t ignore the way his pulse quickened around Vivian.
It was the same feeling he’d had when he first met Evelyn in college.
Back at her apartment, the doorbell rang incessantly.
Evelyn peered through the peephole.
Alexander’s striking features filled the distorted glass—still as breathtaking as ever.
The desperation in his eyes sent a thrill through her.
She didn’t open the door. Instead, she settled onto the barstool, sipping her coffee while the chime echoed through the loft.
She knew Alexander cared more about her than Victoria now.
But then why had he agreed to marry her?
There had to be a reason.
Her phone lit up again—an unknown number.
Evelyn strode to the floor-to-ceiling windows and answered.
Victoria’s icy voice slithered through the line.
"Vivian, don’t think I don’t see what you’re doing. Using your pregnancy to sabotage my wedding? Dream on."
"Alexander is taking me to my dress fitting tomorrow. A custom design worth seven figures. Everything I want, he gives me."
"Stay out of my relationship. He’s mine. Cross me, and I’ll ruin you."
Evelyn laughed, light and careless. "Oh, Victoria, I’m stepping right into your relationship. Try and stop me."
"You—!" Victoria hissed. "I won’t give you the chance!"
The line went dead.
The doorbell still rang.
After a moment’s consideration, Evelyn finally opened the door.
Alexander’s eyes brightened.
"Vivian."
"Mr. Blackwood," she said coolly, "we have nothing left to discuss." She moved to shut the door.
He caught it, his gaze burning into hers. "You once asked if you were destined to fall for the same man just because you look like her. Let me answer now—so am I."
"Because you remind me of her, I’ve fallen for you without realizing it."
But Evelyn didn’t grasp the deeper meaning.
"Alexander, I don’t understand."
"You don’t have to," he murmured. "Just know I want to marry you. Truly."
"Really?" she asked, tilting her head.
"Yes," he said firmly. Then, his brow furrowed. "But first, I have to go through with marrying Victoria."
"Why?" Confusion flickered in her wide eyes. "Why her?"
Alexander studied her for a long moment before exhaling. "You really want to know? Fine. I’ll tell you."
