Chapter 35
"Why did I waste my bone marrow saving a monster like you?" Evelyn's voice trembled with rage. "Alexander must be blind to love someone as vile as you!"
Her palm connected with Victoria's cheek again and again. The commotion drew everyone in the mansion outside.
Margaret saw her daughter being struck and lunged at Evelyn, yanking her hair and kicking viciously. But Evelyn's grip on Victoria only tightened.
"Alexander! It hurts! Save me!" Victoria wailed dramatically. "She's going to kill me!"
The screams finally brought Alexander running.
"Evelyn, have you lost your mind?" He tore the hysterical woman away, immediately gathering Victoria into his protective embrace.
"Alexander, my face...it burns!" Victoria sniffled pitifully against his chest. "She's gone completely mad!"
Evelyn charged forward again. "Stop your pathetic act, Victoria! I should be the one crying! How did I ever cross paths with a snake like you?"
"Alexander, listen to her!" Margaret shrieked. "This witch dares attack Victoria right in front of you and still claims to be the victim! You should've divorced her years ago!"
Alexander's brows furrowed dangerously. His glacial gaze could have frozen hell itself.
"Evelyn." His voice was lethally quiet. "You keep pushing me. Do you have a death wish?"
A bitter laugh escaped Evelyn's lips. Death was already coming for her. "Open your eyes, Alexander! Is that really a human you're holding, or a venomous creature?"
Slap! Margaret's palm cracked across Evelyn's face. "How dare you speak about Victoria that way!"
"She's worse than an animal!" Evelyn met Alexander's glare unflinchingly. "Do you know what your precious darling did? She kidnapped Henry and is demanding ten million from me!"
"Evelyn, what nonsense are you spouting?" Victoria's voice dripped with innocence. "Why would I do something so horrible? Even though he's not my blood relative, we're still sisters. I care about Henry too. Besides, what motive would I have?"
"Revenge! You want to destroy me completely!"
"That's absurd!" Victoria's eyes welled with crocodile tears. "Alexander, you must believe me. I'd never do such a thing. If I'm lying, may our baby be stillborn!"
"Victoria! Don't make such oaths because of this lunatic!" Margaret clutched her chest dramatically.
Victoria remained calm. "I'm not afraid because I speak the truth."
Evelyn's laugh was hollow. The true irony? Alexander believed every word.
He pulled Victoria closer, his icy stare piercing through Evelyn. "You claim Henry was kidnapped?"
"Yes!" Evelyn stood her ground. "She admitted it to me just moments ago!"
Without a word, Alexander pulled out his phone and called the hospital. He put it on speaker as he asked about Henry's status.
The nurse's cheerful voice rang out clearly. "Mr. Whitmore? He's sleeping peacefully in his room."
Each word struck Evelyn like a physical blow, freezing the blood in her veins.
She saw the frost deepen in Alexander's eyes. Instead of hanging up, he asked coldly, "What about his condition? The lung cancer diagnosis?"
