Chapter 424

Alexander had just ended his afternoon conference when Margaret Blackwood's call came through.

"Alexander, Sophia's returned from Paris. She's hosting a welcome dinner at the estate tonight. You must attend."

Before he could protest, the line went dead.

Normally, Alexander would never waste time on such trivial gatherings. But Evelyn had unexpectedly volunteered to accompany him.

While Alexander parked the car, Evelyn waited by the wrought iron gates. That's when she overheard Margaret's venomous whisper from inside.

"That woman may resemble Evelyn, but she's ten times more cunning. I can't fathom what spell she's cast over Alexander - he obeys her every whim!"

Sophia's saccharine voice chimed in, "Aunt Margaret, she deliberately provoked me today, then told Cousin Alexander I started it! How could he fall for such a schemer? We must separate them."

"Easier said than done. She's carrying his child now."

"Pregnant?" Sophia gasped. Her next words died as her expression shifted abruptly. "Cousin! You're here!"

She rose gracefully, her sickly-sweet tone returning. But when Evelyn appeared beside Alexander, Sophia's smile froze before reforming into something brittle. "Sister-in-law, my deepest apologies about this morning. I'll watch my step more carefully."

Evelyn's lips curved without warmth. "You should watch your tongue as well. Or this 'scheming woman' might take offense."

Sophia's mouth worked soundlessly, humiliation staining her cheeks.

Alexander's stormy gaze swept over his cousin as he protectively guided Evelyn inside.

Damn it! Sophia seethed silently, not daring to speak her mind in Alexander's presence.

The estate felt hollow without Reginald Blackwood's presence. Old Master Blackwood remained upstairs, his health declining.

Concern tightened Evelyn's chest. Henry Blackwood had been her sole ally during those dark years. She'd hoped to check on him tonight.

"I'm visiting Grandfather," Evelyn announced, accepting a tea tray from a maid.

Sophia intercepted her, snatching the tray. "Let me, Vivian. Grandfather Henry adores me - he'll be thrilled I'm visiting. You might not even get past the door."

Her innocent expression couldn't mask the challenge in her eyes.

Evelyn followed silently as Sophia rapped sharply on the oak door. "Grandfather Henry? It's Sophia! You remember your favorite niece, don't you?"

Silence.

"See? He's resting." Sophia smirked, turning triumphantly.

Then the raspy voice came: "Is my granddaughter-in-law there?"

Sophia's face fell as the door creaked open.

"Grandfather Henry! I—"

"Not you." The old man's cane blocked her path as he smiled at Evelyn. "Come in, child. We have matters to discuss."

Evelyn glided past Sophia's crimson face, satisfaction warming her chest.

Inside, before she could inquire about his health, Henry sighed deeply. "Evelyn, I've known it was you all along. My time grows short, but seeing you safe brings me peace. There's something important we must discuss..."
