Chapter 83
Evelyn couldn't help but suspect Catherine had some sort of personality disorder. The way she treated her was so unpredictable.
Just then, a tall, elegant figure appeared in the doorway.
Catherine's eyes immediately brightened. "Mr. Whitman, what brings you here?"
Her entire demeanor shifted, becoming sickeningly sweet.
The other employees quickly set down their things, offering respectful smiles to Sebastian. "Mr. Whitman."
Evelyn finally snapped out of her daze. But everyone had already greeted him. Speaking up now would seem like she was trying too hard. So she simply nodded with a polite smile.
Sebastian returned Evelyn's smile before entering. He carried himself with effortless grace, his handsome features radiating quiet confidence.
"Thank you all for your hard work. I wish you success with the new project," he said warmly.
Catherine shot her colleagues a meaningful look that they all understood immediately.
"Thank you for your encouragement, Mr. Whitman! We won't let you down!"
"Excellent." Sebastian nodded.
Catherine flipped her long, curled hair over one shoulder, waiting expectantly. But instead of approaching her, Sebastian walked right past and stopped before Evelyn.
Catherine's smile froze. The other employees exchanged curious glances.
Evelyn suddenly understood - Catherine had feelings for Sebastian. But before she could process this realization fully, he was already standing before her.
"Evelyn." His voice was gentle. "How are you adjusting?"
Evelyn stood quickly. "Mr. Whitman, I'm doing well. Thank you for this incredible opportunity."
"We're family. No need for such formality." Sebastian's smile was warm.
The office erupted in whispers at his words.
All eyes turned to Evelyn with shock and confusion. Everyone was dying to know how she was connected to their boss.
"There's a family dinner tonight. I'll give you a ride since I'm heading home too."
Evelyn hesitated before declining. "That's not necessary. I can get there myself."
"We're going to the same place. Why stand on ceremony?" Sebastian asked with an amused smile.
Evelyn didn't know how to refuse again without seeming rude.
But accepting would make them appear too close.
As the silence stretched awkwardly, Sebastian spoke again.
"While Evelyn and I share a special connection, she earned her position here through her own merits. As she's still new, I hope you'll all make her feel welcome."
"Don't worry, Mr. Whitman! I'll take excellent care of Evelyn!" Catherine interjected, suddenly appearing beside them. She even gave Evelyn's shoulder an overly familiar pat. "Evelyn, darling, come to me with any questions. Mr. Whitman's friend is my friend!"
Evelyn nearly rolled her eyes at Catherine's fake enthusiasm.
Soon after, Evelyn and Sebastian left together under the office's bewildered stares.
When the elevator reached the lobby, Evelyn's phone rang. Alexander.
She stared at the caller ID, hesitating several seconds before declining the call.
It was the first time she'd ever hung up on him.
"Not answering?" Sebastian asked curiously.
Evelyn forced a light smile. "Just a telemarketer."
As the elevator doors opened and Evelyn stepped out, she froze.
There stood Alexander, dressed entirely in black, his expression stormy.
