Chapter 655
Dominic Kingsley and Evelyn Sinclair headed to the lounge for tea. Or more accurately, they were there to hear Benjamin Carter's report.
Midway through, Nathan Blackwood received a phone call and stepped out.
Evelyn sat quietly sipping her tea. Less than fifteen minutes later, she faintly heard Nathan's angry voice through the walls. She set down her cup and stood.
Before reaching the door, she caught Nathan's icy words to Dominic: "What kind of bullshit AI psychiatrist is this? It can't solve my problem so it tells me to forget? Do I need a machine to tell me forgetting is the solution?!"
Dominic asked, "Then who does it want you to forget?"
"Fuck off!"
Evelyn retreated back to her seat, arms crossed. Nathan and Dominic entered moments later. Nathan's displeasure was palpable. "This project needs postponing. The system's too rigid. If it can't even comprehend one percent of human psychology, how can we claim it'll revolutionize anything?"
Dominic looked like a wronged child. Evelyn pressed her lips together.
"Get world-class experts to test it. We'll launch when it meets their standards." Dominic's eyes brightened. "Now that's a solid plan! Precise and—"
Nathan's jaw tightened. His sunken gaze locked onto Evelyn as he remained silent. Dominic glanced between them. "Mr. Blackwood, what do you think of Ms. Sinclair's suggestion?"
Everything hinged on Nathan's response.
Nathan arched a brow, his lips curling as he studied Evelyn. "What she said." Of course - only Evelyn could sway Nathan's decisions.
Their eyes met. Nathan's smile turned probing. "Who were you thinking about in there? Who can't you move on from?"
A beat passed. Evelyn's gaze darkened before she suddenly laughed. "I didn't go in."
Nathan froze. His head snapped toward Dominic.
Dominic shrunk into his seat, playing dead. The silence stretched until Nathan's tension visibly dissipated. "Then... do you want to know who I was thinking about?" His intense stare burned into Evelyn.
She smiled faintly. "No."
Not interested. Nathan's amusement died. The simulation had forced him to relive his worst nightmare - painfully accurate memories of Evelyn crying alone after filing for divorce. He'd tried to comfort her, but she couldn't see him. That heartbreak had terrified him.
The system had offered to erase those memories - to make him forget Evelyn. He'd refused instantly.
Forgetting her would hurt more than having his heart carved out. Nathan's dark eyes traced her features. Suddenly, he chuckled.
"Evelyn, you're really—" Before he could finish, her icy glare made his pulse jump. He pivoted smoothly: "Really... too beautiful." Dominic nearly choked.
"What the hell is Mr. Blackwood saying?" Evelyn had no response. When Bennett messaged her, she excused herself immediately.
Nathan laughed again, equal parts resigned and determined. His hunger to win her back hadn't dimmed. "What can I do? Even when she freezes me out, I'd still come running if she crooked a finger. She's crushed my pride, but I'll still lift her up."
At Blackwood Industries, Tristan Whitmore waited miserably in the lounge. After nearly three hours, when Nathan finally returned, Tristan rushed over clutching his chest dramatically. "Nate, my heart's breaking—"
