Chapter 685
Natalie frowned. "Oliver was just here."
Evelyn froze mid-step and immediately straightened. "Let's split up and find him." She headed toward the garden where the boy often played. Twinkling fairy lights transformed the space into an enchanted forest, designed specifically for Oliver's whimsical tastes.
As Evelyn approached, she caught snippets of conversation from shadowy figures seated on a stone bench.
Just as she turned to leave, Oliver's name reached her ears. "That child must be Evelyn's illegitimate son with some unknown man."
"Obviously. Look how the Sterlings dote on him. They indulge his every whim. Would they treat an outsider with such affection?"
"How could Evelyn stoop so low?" "No wonder the Blackwoods kicked her out!" "Yet Nathan still came tonight. Why would he want such a tainted woman?"
"Rich marriages are all about alliances. They'll each have their affairs anyway. Lucky for her she was born wealthy." "William must be ashamed. She's nothing like our Alexandra."
Evelyn stood rooted, icy fury creeping through her veins. For the first time, she understood the depths of her own restraint. These vipers smiled to her face while stabbing her in the back.
Snowflakes dusted Evelyn's shoulders as bitter laughter threatened to escape. This year kept delivering priceless moments.
"Pretty Lady!" Oliver's voice rang out from the darkness. The gossiping matrons shrieked, whirling to find Evelyn's glacial smile inches away. Their faces drained of color.
"E-Evelyn! W-when did you—"
Her voice cut sharper than winter wind. "Didn't your mothers teach you not to bite the hand that feeds you?"
The women trembled like autumn leaves. "M-misunderstanding! We heard rumors—"
"Rumors?" Evelyn's laugh held no warmth. "Oliver's existence isn't public knowledge. Where exactly did these 'rumors' originate?"
Their panicked glances darted toward the mansion's golden glow. "You heard nothing! We said nothing!"
One grabbed the other's arm. "Let's go inside!" If they denied everything, what could one woman prove?
Evelyn's eyes darkened as they scurried away. Inside, William beckoned guests toward lavish refreshments, the cheerful scene a stark contrast to the garden's revelations.
