Chapter 748

Now and forever.

"By the way, have you finished your business in Sandford?" Evelyn asked.

Preston replied, "I came looking for you."

His gaze burned too intensely, his words too warm and tender. It flustered Evelyn. She couldn't bring herself to meet his eyes.

She bit her lip, blinking rapidly to maintain composure.

"Was there something specific you needed?"

Preston studied her intently. Her eyes shimmered faintly like stars. Up close, they sparkled brilliantly.

After a long moment, he suddenly chuckled. The corners of his lips curled into a dangerously charming smile.

"I'm particularly interested in you. Of course I'd find excuses to see you."

Evelyn froze. She hadn't expected such bluntness.

For a heartbeat, she couldn't formulate a response.

Watching her struggle, Preston's eyes darkened with amusement. "Speechless? If you're that moved—"

"Samuel, I'm entrusting my daughter to your care. When she's discharged, I expect her livelier than ever!"

William Sterling's booming voice approached Evelyn's hospital room.

"Don't worry. Ms. Sterling's recovery is remarkable, thanks to her boyfriend. How did you find one with matching blood type? With him around, she's practically invincible!"

A cheerful elderly voice responded. The door swung open.

Four pairs of eyes met.

Evelyn recovered first, smiling at the man beside her father.

"Dr. Whitmore, how are you?"

The director was an old family friend who'd treated Evelyn since childhood.

Neither Dr. Whitmore nor William showed any embarrassment at being overheard.

"Ms. Sterling, your father's threatening me with bribes. Your health better cooperate!"

Evelyn laughed. "The doctor said it's minor. I'll walk again in months."

Dr. Whitmore nodded. William stepped forward to push Evelyn's wheelchair.

"Enough distractions. Everyone out—my daughter needs rest!"

After brief farewells, Dr. Whitmore left. Preston entered properly.

"Mr. Sterling, I have pressing matters. My team's collecting me this afternoon. Thank you for your hospitality."

William looked startled, then clapped Preston's shoulder.

"Nonsense! You saved Evelyn—you're family now. Business comes first, but from today, our chef will deliver meals until you've recovered—"

Preston blinked. "That's unnecessary—"

"Nonsense! Visit anytime—consider our home yours."

Preston accepted graciously.

Evelyn massaged her temples. Her father's attitude shift was whiplash-inducing.

She cringed recalling the earlier conversation. Their interest in Preston seemed... clinical.

The Sterlings were the ones with ulterior motives.

'Couldn't they be subtler?' she groaned internally.

Thankfully Preston showed no offense. Otherwise, she'd have dug through the floor.

That afternoon.

Exhausted, William finally went home.

Evelyn nibbled fruit Lucas prepared when Alexander burst in, documents clutched tightly.

His expression was stormy.

Lucas wiped Evelyn's hands, smirking.

"Looks like big brother caught our culprit."
