Chapter 749
Alexander's piercing gaze lowered as he passed the file to Evelyn.
"That scarred man is indeed Lawrence Sinclair's enforcer. His specialty is fabricating accidents at construction sites to delay projects."
Evelyn's breath hitched. Her eyes darkened.
Was it any surprise that Lawrence Sinclair treated human lives like pawns in a game?
Lucas slammed his palm against his thigh. "Damn it! He actually dared to target Evie. We can't let him walk away unscathed. Before handing him over to the authorities, we need to make sure he regrets ever crossing us!"
Alexander studied Lucas. His jaw clenched, his expression shadowed with something unreadable.
"I've looked into his background. He's a construction worker. The reason he sold his soul to Lawrence Sinclair? His daughter has cancer. The surgeries she needed were funded by Sinclair's blood money."
Silence swallowed the room.
The Sterlings weren't cruel by nature. They had compassion. But Evelyn, who had nearly lost her life, felt nothing but cold detachment.
Lucas was the first to recover—likely because he'd seen enough dramatic scripts to recognize tragedy when it stared him in the face.
He scoffed, voice dripping with disdain. "So to save his own child, he murders others? What a hypocrite. All those innocent lives—doesn’t he fear karma will come for his daughter next?"
A reason didn’t equate to absolution.
Evelyn pitied the man’s daughter, but that didn’t excuse his crimes.
Especially not when she had just clawed her way back from death’s door.
Compared to a man drenched in blood, wasn’t the survivor the real victim here?
The flicker of sympathy in her chest vanished.
She lifted her chin, meeting Alexander’s eyes. Her voice was ice.
"If he made a deal with the devil, he should burn with him. We don’t have the right to forgive him for the dead. Let the law handle it."
Alexander had never intended to show mercy. No matter the excuse, touching Evelyn meant ruin.
But he’d worried she might hesitate—so he came to her first.
Turns out, she was far more ruthless than he’d anticipated.
Good.
"Understood. I’ll arrange everything. Don’t worry—we won’t interfere, but we won’t lift a finger to help him either."
That was their line.
No Sterling would pay for his daughter’s treatment.
Nor would they sink low enough to target an innocent child.
Evelyn nodded. Alexander ruffled her hair before turning to Lucas. "I’m heading back to the office. Call if you need anything."
Lucas fumed. He’d already plotted a dozen ways to make the bastard suffer—only to be thwarted by reason.
That criminal was getting off too easy.
Silence settled again.
Noticing Evelyn’s mood, Lucas brightened. "Hey, I could set up a projector in here! We could binge movies. Or—better yet—install a karaoke machine!"
Evelyn stared at him, incredulous. Is he planning to move in permanently?
She pulled the blanket over her head with a sigh. "Lucas, I need rest. Go… entertain yourself somewhere else."
Ungrateful! Lucas huffed.
He stormed out, muttering. Plenty of people would kill for my company. Evie has no idea how lucky she is.
