Chapter 772
Before Lucas could erupt into a string of curses, William frowned and turned to Preston Sinclair.
"As soon as Oliver was involved, we mobilized our resources to investigate. Your influence in Montecito isn't that extensive yet. How can you guarantee this will disappear by tomorrow?"
As a seasoned businessman, William Sterling never trusted anything without absolute certainty.
Could Nathan Blackwood really do this based on his attitude toward Evelyn? William seriously doubted Preston's claims.
Preston's gaze remained steady, warm and sincere, without a trace of deception or anger.
"My domestic connections may be limited, but I have substantial influence overseas. One of the major shareholders of this media platform resides abroad and maintains close ties with me. He was the source of this information. Blackwood Industries pressured them to suppress it, but it's not confidential among their executives."
William's expression darkened. "Nathan Blackwood, that bastard!"
Preston lowered his eyes slightly. "I've already negotiated with their senior management. This isn't just about me, but also the Sterling family's reputation. After 10 PM tonight, they'll restrict traffic and it'll vanish by tomorrow."
He should have acted sooner. Then Blackwood Industries wouldn't have gotten a second chance to exploit the situation.
The resurgence of the trending topic hurt more than just Preston.
The damage was irreparable.
William's face flushed with anger. When Lucas recovered from his shock, he remained silent, his expression grim.
They had both overestimated Nathan's integrity.
On reflection, it made sense. If Nathan could hurt Evelyn so deeply before, what kind of character did he truly possess?
Among them, Evelyn remained the calmest, which unsettled Preston.
He pressed his lips together. "Evelyn, I sincerely apologize for today's incident."
Evelyn smiled. "This isn't your fault. You're a victim too, so no apology is necessary."
"The online rumors are false. I know that woman, and everything she said is fabricated. Only what I told you before is true."
Preston paused, perhaps feeling his words sounded too arrogant, then added, "If you don't believe me, you can investigate. The truth won't be distorted."
Oliver wasn't his biological son, and Preston had only shared this with Evelyn.
He only needed her to believe in his innocence.
Preston had long wanted to clarify that no matter how vicious the internet rumors about him were, he could ignore them. His only concern was whether Evelyn would believe him.
After confirming with the overseas shareholders that the issue would be resolved, Preston rushed through the pouring rain to see her.
He wanted to apologize personally and explain himself.
Preston's humble demeanor took William and Lucas by surprise.
The Sterling father and son exchanged glances, pressed their lips together, and stayed silent.
Clearly, Preston's explanation was the real purpose of his visit.
Evelyn's eyes and lips curved into a faint smile.
Though slightly uncomfortable, she maintained her composure in front of others.
"Mr. Sinclair, there's no need for such extensive explanations. We certainly believe in your innocence. You don't need to prove anything."
Preston studied her clear, beautiful eyes. He felt relief but also a sinking sensation in his chest.
Did she believe him, or did she simply not care?
However, he wasn't in a position to press further. He quickly resumed his usual composed and modest demeanor.
A careless chill laced his voice.
"Right, but I won't let the perpetrator off so easily. It's utterly absurd to condemn someone based on mere words..."
