Chapter 852
A sudden force jerked Evelyn's arm, pulling her sideways with violent urgency.
The sound of shattering porcelain exploded through the air. Shards sprayed across the exact spot where Evelyn had stood moments before.
She collided with a solid chest that smelled faintly of sandalwood and power. "Mr. Sinclair?"
Evelyn's breath caught. What was Preston doing here?
In one fluid motion, Preston shoved her behind him. His glacial glare pinned the woman chasing Evelyn in place.
The pursuer froze mid-step, recognition draining the color from her face.
Andrew Caldwell arrived at the commotion, his expression shifting from concern to shock. "What's happening here?"
"That bitch stole the child!" the woman spat.
Andrew's jaw tightened. "Two grown adults couldn't watch one child?" He caught himself, glancing at Evelyn and Preston. "Ms. Sinclair, care to explain your presence?"
"Ms. Devereux begged for my help," Evelyn said, stepping forward. "I couldn't ignore a mother's plea."
Andrew's face darkened. "That's my child too! She's mentally unstable - keeps the boy locked away while she parades him between lovers' homes!"
Evelyn recoiled. Both sides claimed abuse. Who was lying?
Preston's fingers interlaced with hers. "Then we'll call the authorities," he declared, voice like tempered steel. "If Evelyn inadvertently aided wrongdoing, we'll make appropriate restitution."
The suggestion electrified Evelyn. Of course - let professionals untangle this mess.
"No police!" the woman shrieked, clutching Andrew's sleeve. "Family matters stay private!"
Evelyn's eyebrows shot up. This "other woman" called Seraphina vulgar names yet fought to keep her child? Illogical unless...
Andrew wiped his brow. "Ms. Sinclair, let's proceed with our contract signing." His smile didn't reach his eyes. "This... misunderstanding needn't affect business."
The pieces clicked. Evelyn tightened her grip on Preston's hand. These people reeked of deception.
