Chapter 895

Nathan's question hung in the air like a blade. The moment it left his lips, a dull ache pierced through his chest, mixing with the simmering rage.

"One mistake from the past, and now every wrong deed gets pinned on me? Why should I bear this burden?" The thought burned through his mind.

Evelyn met his gaze with icy composure. "Your subordinate did this. Who would believe you had no part in it?"

Unless Cassandra was acting alone, desperate to please Nathan.

Unconditional trust didn't exist between them anymore.

Evelyn had trusted Nathan once - it cost her three years of pain. She wouldn't make that mistake again.

Nathan's eyes blazed with barely contained fury. Veins stood out on his forehead. Yet when facing her, he fought to keep his voice steady.

His Adam's apple bobbed. "Let me make this clear. It wasn't me. I had nothing to do with this!"

The pleading in his voice cut deeper than any knife. He couldn't bear her accusatory stare.

When Evelyn noticed the redness creeping into the corners of his eyes, something unfamiliar twisted in her chest. She crushed the feeling instantly.

"Whether you're involved or not doesn't matter. She's your employee - take responsibility."

Just saying he wasn't involved changed nothing. If he weren't Nathan Blackwood, would Cassandra have dared approach her?

Nathan stared for a long moment before speaking. "Evelyn, do you enjoy hurting me this much?"

Across from them, Preston couldn't stay silent any longer. Nathan's reaction surprised him. He stepped forward. "Mr. Blackwood, let's focus on the facts."

Nathan shoved Preston violently aside. His pent-up emotions exploded. "Get the hell out! Who do you think you are? You think I won't touch you?"

Evelyn rose, her eyes glinting dangerously. "He's my boyfriend. Show some respect, Nathan Blackwood."

The air froze.

Nathan's shocked gaze locked onto Evelyn. After a heavy silence, his chest heaved violently. His eyes reddened as a cold laugh tore from his throat.

"Boyfriend? So you chose him after all. No matter what I do, you'll never look back, will you?" His voice rasped with desperation.

Evelyn's lips curved into a serene smile. "Never. I told you before - whoever I choose will always be better than you."

Nathan's expression darkened dangerously.

Evelyn maintained her graceful composure. "We were married once. Since I'm seeing someone now, you should wish me well. Let's keep our interactions strictly business from now on. And keep your people away from me - next time, I won't be so lenient."

Her gentle tone made the words cut deeper.

Behind them, Cassandra realized with dawning horror that she'd accelerated the end of Nathan and Evelyn's relationship instead of removing obstacles. 'He must despise me now.'

Evelyn turned to Preston with soft eyes. "Let's go."

They left together, the picture of a perfect couple.

No one noticed Nathan's bloodshot eyes.

Cassandra approached cautiously. "Mr. Blackwood, I'm so sorry—"

"Get out!" Nathan whirled, his rage terrifying. He kicked a nearby chair with enough force to send it skidding across the floor. No one dared move closer.
