Chapter 913
Alexander still insisted on taking Evelyn to Dr. Samuel Whitmore's hospital.
Her injury was clearly just a sprained ankle, yet they performed a full-body examination.
By then, Sebastian and Alexander had already left.
Lucas waited outside with Natalie, eyeing Preston Sinclair who stood nearby.
Preston wore a faint smile, clearly in high spirits.
Lucas couldn't help but scoff. "Mr. Sinclair, are you really that happy my sister got hurt?"
Preston stiffened slightly, his smile fading as he met Lucas's gaze.
"I'm not happy she's injured, Lucas. Don't misunderstand."
Since Lucas was Evelyn's brother, Preston made sure to exercise 120% of his patience with him.
Lucas smirked. "Even though Dad and my older brother told me to be polite to you, I'll be honest—I don’t approve of Evelyn being with you."
Natalie shot Lucas a sidelong glance, lips parting as if to speak, but she held back. A trace of exasperation flickered in her eyes.
Preston's expression darkened slightly. "May I ask why?"
Lucas grinned, his handsome face effortlessly charming. "You have money, but that’s the one thing our family doesn’t lack. To us, you don’t bring anything special to the table. And—" He paused meaningfully. "You already have a child. The rumors online might’ve been unfair, but some of them held truth, didn’t they?"
Preston’s gaze turned icy, but he remained silent.
Lucas continued, undeterred. "Sure, Evelyn’s been married before, but that doesn’t mean she’ll lower her standards. It’s sad enough she hasn’t even had a proper relationship at her age, but we won’t just hand her over to the first decent man who comes knocking."
He leaned in slightly, his tone mocking. "If it were up to me, I’d tell her to date around. Once she’s seen enough, she’ll know exactly who she wants. Don’t you agree, Mr. Sinclair?"
The words were a blatant challenge.
Lucas might as well have spelled out "back off" in the air. Preston could date Evelyn, but marriage? Not a chance—he wouldn’t even be her first serious boyfriend.
Natalie rubbed her temples, exasperated.
Without Evelyn around to rein him in, Lucas had a talent for pushing people to their limits.
If he was so bold, why hadn’t he said any of this online?
Clearly, he thought Preston was soft-spoken—easy to bully.
Natalie studied Preston’s expression, unsure if he was truly unbothered or just masking his anger. Anyone would be furious after hearing those words.
If this had been Nathan Blackwood… Well, Lucas’s status as Evelyn’s brother wouldn’t have saved him.
Yet Preston stood tall, his composed demeanor unchanged, as if he hadn’t caught the insult.
Lucas watched him, smirking, waiting for a reaction.
Preston lowered his gaze, lips curving into a faint, indifferent smile.
"Dating too much has its drawbacks. Missing the right person would be a regret, wouldn’t it?" His eyes flicked meaningfully toward Natalie. "I’m sure you understand that better than most."
The air turned frigid.
Lucas stiffened, eyes widening as he whipped his head toward Natalie.
She was already on her feet, phone in hand, her expression unreadable.
She didn’t even glance at him.
"I’m at the hospital. I’ll be back at the office soon. Proceed with the meeting as scheduled."
The call ended. She walked away, her retreating figure tense.
