Chapter 951
Evelyn Sinclair froze when she heard Amelia Sinclair wanted to see her.
As Alexander Sterling's fiancée, Evelyn couldn't afford to be dismissive.
"Come in."
She smiled as Amelia entered. The woman carried herself with effortless grace, her gentle features radiating warmth like sunlight through spring leaves.
"Amelia, here to see my brother?"
Amelia's lips curved. "We have lunch plans, but I wanted to speak with you first."
Evelyn arched a brow at Bennett, who nodded and excused himself.
The two had never been alone before.
Though Evelyn regretted that Isabella Montgomery and Alexander hadn't worked out, she refused to interfere.
Her brother's choices were his own.
"How is Ms. Montgomery recovering?"
Evelyn hesitated. A flicker of tension crossed her face. "She's much better. Just discharged."
"I remember how close you two were in high school." Amelia's smile turned knowing. "She often delivered things to Alexander on your behalf—chocolates, drinks, little gifts. Made quite an impression."
The words carried an edge.
Evelyn's fingers stilled around her coffee cup. I never asked Isabella to give him anything.
The realization struck instantly. Amelia had noticed Isabella's feelings.
No wonder she'd lost her composure earlier.
This wasn't a casual visit—it was reconnaissance.
Evelyn met her gaze evenly. "Alexander hates sweets. Always has."
Amelia exhaled sharply. "We fought over it. That's why I left the country—why I cut contact."
Evelyn's eyes widened. "That was the reason?"
"Partly." Amelia leaned forward. "Just answer me this—does she still love him?"
Her voice wavered, just once.
Evelyn set her cup down. "Isabella is my friend. But I don't play matchmaker. Ask her yourself."
Amelia laughed bitterly. "Too cruel."
She wouldn't humiliate Isabella by forcing a confession.
Evelyn studied her. "Amelia, my brother adores you. So does our family. No one could take him from you."
For a heartbeat, Amelia's mask slipped. Then, genuine relief softened her features.
"I overthought it. No wonder Alexander treasures you." She squeezed Evelyn's hand. "I will too."
The door swung open before Evelyn could respond.
Alexander strode in, exasperated.
"Amelia, stop distracting my sister. Come bother me instead."
Evelyn nearly choked on her coffee.
Since when is Alexander cheesier than Lucas?
