Chapter 220
Alexander let out a low, mocking chuckle, his piercing gaze following Evelyn's retreating figure. "You honestly believe that's Evelyn?"
"Don't be ridiculous! Of course it's her!" Olivia snapped without hesitation. "Alexander, I'm warning you - if you hurt Evelyn again, I'll make sure you regret it this time!"
Hearing Olivia's fierce declaration, Alexander's lips twisted into a bitter smile.
A friend willing to go to war for her.
But what about her husband?
Alexander remained silent, sliding into the driver's seat and starting the engine.
Evelyn sat stiffly in the passenger seat, watching Olivia's distressed form shrink in the side mirror until her heart ached with each passing second.
'I'm so sorry, Olivia.'
'Now isn't the time.'
'I'll beg for your forgiveness once everything is over.'
As the car approached an intersection, Evelyn suddenly spoke. "Pull over."
Alexander shot her a questioning look but saw only determination in her expression.
The moment the car stopped, Evelyn flung the door open.
Alexander's expression darkened. He lunged after her, fingers closing around her slender wrist. "Where do you think you're going?"
Evelyn turned with an irritated glare. "I saved your precious reputation back there, Mr. Blackwood. But I'm getting tired of your little games. We both know you weren't taking me to breakfast - you just wanted to see if Olivia would recognize me."
She tilted her chin defiantly. "Am I wrong?"
"No." Alexander's grip tightened as he studied her face. "You look exactly like my late wife. That alone would be coincidence enough, but you're also Sebastian's fiancée. You'll forgive me for being suspicious."
Evelyn laughed coldly. "The world works in mysterious ways, Mr. Blackwood. After all, didn't you cheat on your wife and drive her to her death? Compared to that, what's impossible?"
Alexander's eyes darkened dangerously.
The face was identical.
But the woman before him was nothing like the timid, insecure Evelyn he'd known.
This woman's gaze burned with intelligence and defiance, her words sharp as daggers.
"Let me go." Evelyn glanced pointedly at her trapped wrist.
Instead of releasing her, Alexander yanked her against his chest.
The familiar scent of his cologne enveloped her, triggering a flood of memories.
Evelyn stiffened. "What are you doing?"
Alexander smirked. "So I'm the villain in your story, Miss Prescott?"
His lips curved into a dangerous smile. "If that's how you see me, you'd better be careful. I do enjoy breaking rules... especially with my future aunt."
Evelyn shoved him away angrily, storming across the street to escape.
She'd taken only three steps when a blaring horn shattered the air.
Evelyn froze.
A speeding car barreled toward her.
Alexander's heart stopped.
"Evelyn—!"
