Chapter 221

Just as the traffic light was about to change, Alexander suddenly reached out and seized Evelyn's wrist, yanking her forcefully into his protective embrace.

A speeding car tore through the intersection, missing Evelyn by mere inches.

The momentum sent Alexander stumbling backward. His arms tightened around Evelyn as they both crashed onto the pavement.

"Don't be scared. You're safe now."

Alexander's deep voice vibrated against Evelyn's ear.

She tried to rise but found herself trapped in his iron grip. His right hand cradled the back of her head instinctively, shielding her from further harm.

Evelyn lay sprawled across Alexander's chest. His distinctive cologne - that achingly familiar scent from her memories - filled her senses.

Her pulse raced erratically. She couldn't tell if it was from the near-accident or their sudden proximity.

A cool breeze snapped her back to reality. "Mr. Blackwood, you can release me now."

Alexander seemed to awaken from a trance. His grip loosened gradually as he recalled how he'd called her 'Evelyn' moments earlier.

"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood." Evelyn stood, brushing off her clothes.

Alexander rose beside her. Seeing her unharmed sent an unexpected wave of relief through him.

Evelyn was about to make her escape when she noticed fresh blood seeping through Alexander's bandaged palm.

She retrieved antiseptic wipes from her purse. Taking his hand gently, she cleaned the reopened wound before wrapping it carefully with her handkerchief.

Alexander remained motionless, watching Evelyn's focused expression. Her delicate brows furrowed in concentration. Each flutter of her lashes felt like feathers brushing against his heart.

His pulse quickened inexplicably.

"Thank you for earlier. I must go now." Evelyn released his hand and turned away.

"Let me drive you."

"No need." She paused, meeting his gaze. "I'd rather not be mistaken for a ghost again."

Without waiting for a response, Evelyn hailed a passing taxi.

Alexander stood rooted as the car disappeared. He examined the handkerchief now covering his wound.

His phone buzzed with Victoria's call.

Alexander's jaw tightened at her name. After a brief hesitation, he answered.

"Alexander! You're finally taking my calls!" Victoria's voice wavered between excitement and distress.

"I know you still suspect me about Ethan's kidnapping. I don't blame you for doubting me."

"Can we meet? There's something important I need to tell you."

She continued her monologue, growing increasingly anxious at his silence.

"Alexander, I swear I've done nothing wrong. Ethan is our son - how could I possibly-"

"Not today," Alexander interrupted coldly. "Bring your parents to Blackwood Estate tomorrow evening. All of you. I have an announcement."

Victoria's breath hitched. After weeks of being ignored, this sudden invitation sent her heart soaring.

"With my parents? Really?" Her voice trembled with hope.

This had to be about their wedding!

"Yes," Alexander confirmed before ending the call.
