Chapter 483
Alexander turned the ignition key without hesitation.
Evelyn's frosty expression melted into hopeful anticipation at his words.

Through the rearview mirror, Alexander noticed Evelyn's white-knuckled grip. Her eyes shimmered with turbulent emotions - longing, fear, and nervous excitement.
A satisfied smirk curled his lips when he caught her genuine smile in the reflection. Finally, after all this time, he saw light return to her face.
But as they navigated through bustling city streets, the scenery grew disturbingly familiar. Evelyn's brows knitted together as she recognized their destination.
'Has my child been living in Pinecrest Heights all along?'
'Who's been caring for my baby?'
The car rolled to a stop before she could voice these questions.
Evelyn didn't wait for Alexander's chivalrous gesture, throwing the door open herself.
The winter beach stretched before them, barren and windswept. Icy sea gusts cut through her coat like knives. No sane person visited Pinecrest Beach in December - even the hardiest locals avoided it.
She spun toward Alexander, eyes blazing. "Where's my child?" The wind snatched at her words. "Why bring me here? I want to see my baby now!"
"You'll hold our child before sunset," he promised.
"Sunset?" Evelyn seized on his phrasing. "Alexander Blackwood, are you playing games with me?"
His lips twisted in a helpless smile. "What choice do I have?"
"Explain. Now." She crossed her arms, patience evaporating.
His gaze softened. "You'll never forgive me. Never love me like before. So I steal what moments I can."
A bitter laugh escaped her. "How pathetic you've become."
"Utterly." His eyes drank in her mocking expression with unsettling tenderness. "Call me despicable. Shameless. I only want this day with you."
Evelyn studied his pleading eyes, then set her jaw. "If I don't see my child by nightfall, you'll regret this deception."
Alexander smiled at her fury.
'Oh Evelyn, if only you knew how I crave your attention - even your anger.'
The thought lingered as he watched her stalk toward the shore. Salty gusts carried fragments of their past - laughter buried beneath years of pain.
He followed, close enough to touch yet eternally out of reach.
An elderly woman struggling with an overflowing basket of sweet potatoes provided unexpected distraction. Several tubers tumbled down the dune.
Evelyn rushed to help. Alexander joined without hesitation.
"Bless you both," the woman panted, then did a double take. "My stars! You two again? Braving this cold to relive old memories?"
Recognition struck simultaneously. This was the retired physician from their youth.
