Chapter 949

Nathan Blackwood studied Evelyn Sinclair's profile—quiet, beautiful, and no longer his.

Dark thoughts festered in his mind. If she wasn't his, should he just destroy her instead?

Evelyn noticed Isabella Montgomery had finished berating Donovan Pierce and waved her over.

Donovan's expression was grim.

They were about to leave when his voice cut through the air, rough as if dragged over gravel.

"Isabella, apart from this, I've never lied to you. I told her we'd finalize the divorce this afternoon. Please... just wait for me."

Before he could finish, Isabella let out a cold laugh.

"You two deserve each other. Don't divorce on my account—I was just unlucky enough to step in something foul. If I ever see you in San Francisco again, I'll make sure you regret it every single time."

After years of playing the field, she'd finally let her guard down for a man she thought was worth keeping. And what did she get?

A married liar.

No matter how wild her reputation was, Isabella had standards.

This wasn't worth it.

With one last scathing remark, she dragged Evelyn away. Harrison hesitated by the door, watching Nathan, but the man showed no intention of intervening. His decision was final.

On the drive back, Evelyn studied Isabella's furious expression and sighed. "Still angry?"

"How could I not be?"

"Nathan suspended the partnership indefinitely. If what you said is true, it's over. Knowing him, he won't give Donovan another chance."

Isabella's expression softened slightly, then froze. She turned to Evelyn.

"I didn’t expect Nathan to be there. Since when does he personally oversee such minor deals?"

Evelyn smiled. Isabella was only now realizing how awkward this was for her. "It’s fine. Business circles are small—we’ll cross paths eventually. But maybe Nathan saw potential in Donovan. Otherwise, as you said, he wouldn’t have bothered."

Isabella scoffed. "Birds of a feather."

One sentence condemned both men, and Evelyn couldn’t argue.

"Should I drop you home?"

"Take me to the office. The Quimbey Group is cutting ties with Donovan. Even if my mother skins me alive, I refuse to work with a man like that."

Evelyn arched a brow but nodded.

At least their involvement wasn’t deep. Ending it would be simple.

Unlike her situation with Nathan—that wouldn’t be resolved with words.

Fifteen minutes later, they arrived at Isabella’s office building.

She inhaled sharply, her face pale. Explaining this to her mother wouldn’t be easy.

Her grip on Evelyn’s hand tightened. "I—I’m nervous. Come up with me?"

Evelyn sighed.

Isabella gave her a pleading look. "My mother adores you. She always says you’re the daughter she wishes she had. Please?"

Evelyn relented. "Fine. But if she hits you, I’m not stepping in."

Isabella nodded. If her mother decided to punish her, no one could save her.

The receptionist, familiar with Isabella, smiled warmly.

"Ms. Montgomery, President Quimbey has been waiting for you upstairs."

Isabella’s face lost all color.
