Chapter 132
Evelyn desperately wanted to explain to the madman that their previous encounter couldn't possibly result in pregnancy.
The silk tie gagging her mouth made speech impossible.
Dominic's frantic internet search and the doctor's response flashed through her mind. That medical professional had warned about potential conception even from precursory intimacy.
The slim chance terrified her.
Exhaustion from recent days clouded her memory. Had she taken the morning-after pill? She'd purchased it, stashed it in her purse...
But the actual consumption remained a blur.
Never in her wildest dreams had Evelyn imagined fearing an accidental pregnancy. Carrying Dominic's child would be her ultimate nightmare. A living sin.
Hot tears spilled before she could stop them.
"Why are you crying?" Dominic's voice softened as he noticed the moisture tracing her cheeks. His dark expression lightened slightly.
Evelyn stared wordlessly until his lips brushed her eyelids.
She flinched at the unexpected warmth.
His mouth trailed downward, catching each salty drop. "What did you expect?" His voice roughened. "You walked into my life then vanished. Did you think I'd simply let you go?"
Silent sobs shook her frame.
"Attraction in that small town was manageable," he confessed, throat working. "But this...this consuming need to possess you? I can't fight it."
She ducked her head, hiding behind a curtain of hair.
Dominic exhaled sharply. "Forget it."
Releasing her, he turned away to light a cigarette.
The nicotine failed to soothe. If anything, it worsened his mood.
The drive home passed in heavy silence.
At her apartment complex, Evelyn exited without looking back. Her eyes burned from unshed tears.
"Grandfather?" She called upon entering.
No response.
She checked each room. Empty.
Her call went straight to voicemail.
The doorbell interrupted her panic.
Expecting her grandfather, she flung open the door to find a deliveryman holding an elegant pastry box.
Her stomach dropped.
This came from the very restaurant whose pastry chef had supposedly left. The one Harrison had taken her to tonight.
Who sent this?
More urgently - where was Grandfather?
Abandoning the mystery dessert, Evelyn rushed downstairs to search for her missing family.
