Chapter 298
The moment the bank teller processed the check, Evelyn felt like she was floating on air.
She'd fully expected the check to bounce, but to her shock, the bank staff treated her with utmost respect.
The funds transferred into her account without any issues.
Evelyn withdrew $100,000 in crisp bills and left the remainder in her account.
For the first time in her life, she hailed a cab instead of taking the bus.
Sitting in the backseat, Evelyn pinched her arm repeatedly to confirm she wasn't dreaming.
The cab driver kept glancing at the middle-aged woman clutching a suspiciously full snakeskin purse while pinching herself.
"Keep your eyes on the road!" Evelyn snapped, hugging her purse tighter. Her shrill voice revealed her true petty nature.
She didn't care where her daughter Olivia got this money - whether from selling her body or selling her soul. Money was money.
Evelyn planned to cook Olivia's favorite dishes tonight. If she played her cards right, maybe she could squeeze more money out of her daughter to bribe prison officials.
The driver merely shook his head, refusing to engage with the unpleasant woman. Unfortunately, the bumpy construction zone road made for a rough ride.
Evelyn was still cursing when they reached the apartment complex.
"Learn how to drive, you imbecile!" she shrieked.
Her vulgar tirade drew shocked stares from neighbors. People quickly crossed the street to avoid the screeching harpy.
Patricia Kensington happened to be arriving just as Evelyn's outburst reached its peak.
Her frown deepened when she recognized Olivia's mother. Though she wanted to ignore the woman, she forced herself to approach.
"Mrs. Kensington, is Olivia home?"
Evelyn whirled around, ready to unleash her fury on the interloper. When she saw Patricia, her face twisted with rage.
"You! First you destroy my son, now you come for my daughter?" she screamed, practically foaming at the mouth.
If she'd had a knife, she might have stabbed Patricia right then.
"My son wouldn't be in prison if not for you!"
"Your son belongs in prison," Patricia said coldly. "I'm here to see Olivia, not argue with you."
Before their breakup, Evelyn had eagerly believed neighborhood gossip that Patricia was cheating. She'd even condoned Nathan's affair with Sophia. Patricia had no respect left for this woman.
But out of respect for Olivia, she tried to walk away.
Evelyn blocked her path, swinging her heavy purse. "Get lost, you homewrecker! My son loved you, and you betrayed him! You should be the one in prison!"
The purse connected with Patricia's shoulder, leaving angry red marks on her neck.
Bystanders watched but didn't intervene. Everyone knew better than to get between Evelyn and her prey.
Patricia finally grabbed Evelyn's wrists. "Enough! I won't hold back anymore!"
"You slut!" Evelyn shrieked. "You cheated on my son with some rich man and framed him! How dare you show your face here?"
The crowd murmured, some looking at Patricia with new suspicion.
Patricia's expression darkened. "Aren't you ashamed of these lies? Your son drugged me and tried to pimp me out to his friends! He belongs in prison!"
The crowd's sympathy immediately shifted.
"So that's why the Kensington boy went to jail!"
"With a mother like that, no wonder he turned out rotten."
"We should petition to have them evicted!"
Evelyn's face purpled with rage.
Patricia turned to leave, knowing she wouldn't see Olivia today. Suddenly, Evelyn hurled her purse.
The overstuffed bag burst upon impact, raining cash everywhere.
Patricia stepped over the scattered bills without a backward glance.
The onlookers immediately began scooping up the money and fleeing.
Evelyn's screams of rage soon turned to wails of despair as she watched her fortune disappear.
