Chapter 395
"Evelyn!" Dominic's voice was raw with terror.
His pupils contracted in sheer panic.
At the last possible second, by some miracle, Dominic lunged forward and seized Evelyn's ankle.
She dangled upside down in the open air, her dark hair whipping wildly in the wind.
The strands obscured her delicate face, now ghostly pale from shock.
One glance downward sent her stomach lurching. The ground yawned a thousand feet below. Heights had always paralyzed her, and now, vertigo threatened to swallow her whole.
Trembling violently, Evelyn still clung to Gregory's arm with desperate strength.
"Hold on, Evelyn! I've got you!" Dominic's hands shook as badly as hers.
The moment he'd seen her dragged toward the edge, his heart had stopped. His lungs had seized.
Thank God he'd caught her in time.
T Corporation employees rushed forward. Sebastian and Gregory Peterson grabbed her other leg while several male colleagues seized her coat, hauling her back from the brink.
"Dominic Blackwood, you bloodsucking tycoon! You destroyed my family!" Gregory's voice was a broken snarl. "If I'm dying today, I'm taking someone with me!"
His eyes burned with pure hatred as they locked onto Dominic.
Dominic, usually the picture of icy control, was unraveling. This reckless fool had pushed him past his limits.
"How dare you, Gregory!" he roared. "I was willing to compensate you fairly for your loss! But this? This is insanity!"
Gregory's breathing turned ragged at Dominic's words. His resolve wavered.
He'd never intended to drag an innocent into his demise.
But what choice did he have? A businessman like him stood no chance against Dominic's empire. Despair had left him only one exit.
The memory of his wife and child twisted like a knife. "If there's any justice, a profiteer like you will rot in hell!" he spat. "I'll die today just to ruin you!"
With that, he began prying Evelyn's fingers from his wrist. She fought to keep her grip, but his arm slipped inexorably from her grasp.
Realization dawned on Evelyn's face, draining what little color remained.
"Mr. Sinclair, listen to me!" she pleaded. "Life has lows, but it has highs too! Dying solves nothing! Your wife and child deserve justice—don't you want to see their killer punished?"
Her voice turned urgent. "Do you think death ends the pain? What about your parents? They've already buried their daughter-in-law and grandchild. Must they bury you too? Stay alive, Mr. Sinclair. Only then can you honor them!"
Dominic saw Gregory hesitate, swayed by Evelyn's words.
His tone turned razor-sharp. "Mr. Sinclair, while I despise your methods, T Corporation will take responsibility. Name your terms—within reason."
Gregory's wild eyes flickered with doubt. "You swear it, Blackwood? Even if I demand that nanny's execution?"
"Done," Dominic said without hesitation. "As long as you live, I guarantee you'll watch her hang."
The promise defused Gregory's frenzy. Seizing the moment, Dominic and the others hauled both Evelyn and Gregory to safety.
The second Evelyn's feet touched solid ground, Dominic dragged her away from the crowd.
His expression was thunderous. Evelyn shot Sebastian and Abigail a helpless look, but they could only offer pitying shrugs.
Trapped, she let Dominic pull her into the nearest top-floor room.
The door slammed shut behind them.
Evelyn knew why he was furious—she'd nearly died. She moved to embrace him.
He shoved her away.
His arm rose, hand poised to strike.
Evelyn flinched, eyes squeezing shut.
Would he hit her for risking herself?
But the blow never landed. Instead, a deafening crack echoed as Dominic's fist smashed into the wall beside her head.
When she dared to look, his knuckles were split and bleeding. His entire body trembled, his eyes bloodshot with fury and fear.
The sight gutted her.
Dominic should've been relieved she'd survived.
But he couldn't control the terror choking him.
His woman had almost died.
If he'd been a second slower, she'd have been a broken corpse on the pavement below. For the first time in his life, he'd tasted powerlessness.
Evelyn wrapped her arms around his waist, holding him tight.
