Chapter 388

The roads were packed during peak hour traffic.

With Dominic's reassuring presence beside her, Evelyn turned the ignition key.

Her hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. Every movement was calculated, terrified of scraping another vehicle—or worse, having someone hit their luxury car.

She failed to notice how every other driver instinctively gave her a wide berth.

A car like this wasn't just expensive—it was a liability. One tiny scratch could bankrupt most people. No one dared risk it.

Despite the congestion, Evelyn managed to keep a steady pace.

Dominic wasn't even watching her. His eyes were closed, his posture relaxed.

The man was perfection—wealthy, powerful, effortlessly handsome. Every woman in the city would kill to be in her position.

She was lucky.

Too lucky.

The thought of Olivia soured her mood. Swallowing her hesitation, she finally spoke. "Dominic... I need to ask you for a favor. I know I shouldn't burden you, but I don't know who else to turn to..."

His sharp gaze shifted to her. "You could never burden me."

Evelyn bit her lip.

Dominic was refined, commanding, used to getting whatever he wanted. Their worlds couldn't be more different.

Yet with her, he was gentle. Patient. She still didn't understand why.

"Olivia's pregnant," she blurted out. "Because of me, Preston targeted her. The doctors said if she loses the baby, she might never conceive again. She wants to keep it, but Preston forced her to..." Her voice cracked. "He's a monster. He hurt her, then took away her child. I want him to pay for what he did!"

The traffic light ahead turned red.

Evelyn slammed the brakes, turning to gauge his reaction.

Dominic's expression was unreadable. He pinched the bridge of his nose, silent. The air in the car grew heavy.

She instantly regretted bringing it up.

"I know it's a lot to ask," she whispered. "Preston is Preston Sr.'s brother, and you two are close. But Olivia's suffering because of me. I can't just—"

Dominic still didn't respond.

Her heart sank. She'd put him in an impossible position.

Then the light turned green.

A horn blared behind them.

Evelyn startled, her foot slipping off the brake. The car lurched forward violently.

Panic seized her. She fumbled for the brakes but lost control—the car veered sharply toward a white BMW.

She screamed.

Everything happened too fast. One second she was bracing for impact, the next Dominic's arm was around her, yanking the wheel hard.

The car swerved, skidding against the guardrail before jerking to a stop.

"Dominic—" Her voice was raw with fear.

His jaw was tight, but they were unharmed—thanks to their seatbelts. Evelyn, however, was ghostly pale, trembling like a leaf.

He cupped her face. "Are you hurt?"

She shook her head, still shell-shocked.

"Scared?" His thumb brushed her cheek. "You're shaking like a rabbit."

She exhaled shakily, pressing a hand to her racing heart. "I—I panicked. If you hadn't reacted so fast..."

Dominic smirked. "The idiot behind us shouldn't have honked. Not your fault."

Evelyn rolled down the window. The bumper was dented, the paint scraped. Her stomach twisted. Repairing this would cost a fortune.

Just then, the BMW driver pulled up beside them.

A slick-haired man leaned out, scowling. "Learn how to drive, morons! You almost totaled my car! You gonna pay for—"

His tirade died the second Dominic's icy glare landed on him.

The man paled. His eyes darted to their license plate—then the custom vanity tag. His bravado evaporated.

Without another word, he sped off.
