Chapter 454
Evelyn Sinclair fixed her gaze on Cassandra Prescott, refusing to let her composure slip. Her usually gentle eyes turned icy.
She took a deliberate sip of milk. "I don't know who you are, Miss. Whether you're Dominic's secret admirer or have some past grievance with him, let me make one thing clear. I'll never leave him unless he asks me to. Who are you to demand such a thing?"
Cassandra narrowed her eyes at the composed Evelyn, her cigarette pausing mid-air.
The young woman before her carried herself with grace and beauty. Pleasant-looking, yet her words cut sharp and precise. Not someone to underestimate. Cassandra felt like she was punching air.
Blowing a smoke ring, Cassandra grabbed a dessert from the table and shoved it into her mouth. "Not bad. This caramel pudding is divine."
The unwelcome visitor had ruined Evelyn's appetite.
She rose gracefully, looking down at Cassandra from her full height. "Enjoy the desserts. I'm leaving."
What rotten luck to encounter such a lunatic today.
The dessert café buzzed with evening diners, but Evelyn had chosen a secluded corner shielded by potted plants, away from prying eyes.
As she reached for her purse, Cassandra stretched out a leg to block her path. "Running away? Too guilty to face me? You're not worthy of Dominic. Take a good look at yourself."
Evelyn's lips curled into a cold smile. "Maybe I'm not, but Dominic loves me anyway. Since you can't have him either, doesn't that make you worse than me?"
Cassandra's smirk froze.
She hadn't expected such defiance. The mask slipped. "Don't be shameless, Evelyn. Leave Dominic voluntarily if you're smart. Otherwise, I'll take this to the Public Integrity Committee!"
She twirled a CD between her fingers.
Evelyn's stomach dropped at the sight of it. She lunged, but Cassandra dodged with a smirk.
Holding the disc between two fingers, Cassandra blew smoke in Evelyn's face. "This contains dirt on Dominic. Guaranteed to interest you... I've made copies. You have until May 1st to leave him. If I submit this, you know the consequences."
With that, she tossed the CD onto the table and strutted away.
Evelyn pocketed the disc, her hands trembling. The desserts turned to ash in her mouth.
Who was this woman? Why target her? An obsessed fan? Someone's pawn? What secrets did the CD hold that made Cassandra so confident?
The questions swirled until her head throbbed.
Then Dominic appeared.
Impeccable in his tailored suit, he moved with effortless grace. The crisp white shirt and navy tie accentuated his aristocratic bearing, drawing every eye in the café.
Normally reserved, Evelyn threw herself into his arms. "Dominic..." Her voice cracked.
He enveloped her, pressing his jaw into her hair before kissing her forehead. "What's wrong? Bad dessert? Rude service? We won't come back."
Seeing her distress, his expression darkened. He raised a hand to summon a waiter.
Evelyn shook her head, nestling closer. "It's fine. The food and service were perfect."
His frown deepened. "But you're upset."
He noticed everything about her. Every flicker of emotion mattered.
She considered telling him about Cassandra, but decided to review the CD first. He had enough work stress without her adding to it.
Countless women pursued him. If he had to personally handle each one, when would he rest? She needed to outmaneuver these rivals herself!
As long as Dominic loved her, she wouldn't surrender to some stranger's threats.
The thought made her chuckle darkly, then suddenly energized.
Turning to him sheepishly, she asked, "Maybe it's pregnancy hormones making me emotional. If I become too dramatic, will you lose patience?"
She held her breath for his answer.
His handsome face turned solemn. "You're my everything. I could never tire of you."
Sweet warmth flooded her.
Cassandra's shadow lifted.
Dominic's mere presence intoxicated her. Even silent, his gaze spoke volumes.
And he'd called her his everything.
She giggled like a schoolgirl.
Her smile lit up her face, long lashes fluttering. The delicate dimples that appeared made her even more captivating, holding Dominic's gaze completely.
