Chapter 236
"A charity foundation that offers free medical aid without conditions? That's just Evelyn's disgusting fabrication..."
Sophia let out a mocking laugh, shaking her head. "Did any foundation representative ever check on you during treatment? Monitor your recovery? These organizations have strict protocols. You received a liver transplant! They'd track your health until your dying breath!"
Her words carried cruel logic.
Five years ago, whenever Evelyn visited Robert in the hospital, she never stayed long - terrified her father might discover the truth.
She'd counted on his critical condition to mask her deception, spinning elaborate lies he'd swallowed whole.
Now with Sophia's revelations, Robert must have recalled those hospital visits. Had he paid closer attention, he'd have noticed Evelyn's evasiveness...
The frail man on the bed grew weaker. His wrinkled fingers twitched, unable to form fists before going slack...
Tears pooled in Robert's clouded eyes.
Evelyn couldn't fathom his emotions, but the video showed his dawning horror at his daughter's betrayal. Then came the crushing realization that Sophia spoke the truth...
"Forgive me, Dad..." She whispered to the recording.
Words she'd never get to say to his face.
Tears fell unchecked.
On screen, Sophia strutted like a preening peacock. "I've told you the truth, Uncle Robert. I didn't want to shatter your image of Evelyn, but these are facts. Don't blame the messenger."
The dying man closed his eyes - whether in shame or despair, no one would ever know.
Sophia leaned over the bed with a predatory smile. "Now that Evelyn's landed a billionaire, I'll admit she's skilled at seduction. The tabloids prove she's living lavishly. Search online - they can't erase everything. Hand over the house to Mother and me within the week, or I'll expose Evelyn's sordid past to her husband's family..."
Suddenly, commotion erupted outside the ward.
Evelyn thought she heard Victoria and Sophia's voices. Was it hatred-induced hallucination?
She set the tablet aside and stepped out.
In the corridor, security blocked Victoria and Sophia.
"I'm the widow! That girl inside may not be my biological daughter, but she's still my stepchild! Can't I visit?" Victoria feigned grief, shoving guards while accusing them of cruelty.
Their orders were clear - only Dominic and Sebastian had access.
"Final warning. Leave now." The guards began forcibly removing them, showing no mercy.
Evelyn emerged, her gaunt frame swimming in the blue-striped hospital gown.
Sophia spotted her first, jabbing Victoria's side.
Victoria turned, meeting Evelyn's withering glare. Her rehearsed tears evaporated instantly.
"Evelyn... are you... recovering?" She managed weakly.
Evelyn moved past the guards, her pallor ghostly.
"Aren't you afraid of divine retribution?"
Sophia shuddered. She saw her mother freeze.
They'd forgotten about hospital surveillance. Of course Evelyn had seen the footage.
And they'd never anticipated Robert dying so abruptly - without a death, Evelyn wouldn't have checked the recordings.
"What do you mean? We didn't kill Dad! We're devastated—"
Evelyn cut her off with a glare that could flay skin. "I've known you both since I was thirteen. From the moment I moved to the city, you made me loathe urban life and yearn for my grandfather's countryside..."
The guards exchanged uncertain glances.
"You conspired against me for years. And my father trusted your lies over his own daughter. He was too kind to you both."
Memories flashed behind Evelyn's eyes.
Tears threatened. Dad, are you watching from heaven?
His dying moments must have been filled with regret over sheltering these vipers.
Why else would he have retched blood and died without final words?
"Listen to me—" Victoria tried.
"No!" Evelyn's voice cracked with hysterical grief. "I want Dad to see your true natures from heaven! If justice exists, may you suffer a thousandfold what you inflicted on him!"
As tensions peaked, Dominic and Sebastian arrived simultaneously.
Sebastian's expression darkened. "Why are they still here? Escort these lunatics to the police station!" He barked at security.
The guards immediately seized Victoria and Sophia.
Dominic's gaze flicked to Evelyn's distraught form before landing on the intruders. Clutching a DNA report, he extinguished his cigarette on Sophia's cheek. "Gender means nothing when you've harmed Evelyn," he said icily.
