Chapter 420
Evelyn had been completely swamped since the urban renewal project with Vivi Group commenced.
Dominic, concerned about her pregnancy, assigned her the lightest tasks. But Evelyn stubbornly insisted on completing her entire workload.
Though they kept their relationship discreet, the design department employees had silently recognized the bond between Dominic and Evelyn.
Despite proving her competence repeatedly since joining six months ago, many still dismissed her as just another pretty face.
She worked tirelessly to demonstrate her worth.
That morning, Evelyn met with city officials from Housing Development, Land Resources, and Urban Planning departments. She absorbed their renovation suggestions, analyzed existing issues, and strategized next steps.
By afternoon, she defied Dominic's protests to conduct a site visit with her team.
Her determination left Dominic no choice but to ensure daily tonics for her health. Yet despite his efforts, Evelyn still lost weight that week.
During lunch, Olivia Kensington gasped at Evelyn's gaunt appearance. "You're skin and bones! Eat more fish - it's good for the baby." She piled Evelyn's plate high.
"Thank you," Evelyn murmured, cheeks flushing as Abigail Thornton and Gregory Peterson stifled giggles nearby. Even Dominic's brother Julian showed concern - surely the Blackwoods were accepting her?
Bernadette Worthing glared from another table, cutlery clenched. How dare Evelyn flirt so brazenly with the General Manager?
Julian flashed his trademark charming grin. "Lunch is on me today, everyone! Order whatever you want!"
The staff cheered. "Really, General Manager?"
"Would this handsome face lie?" Julian teased, prompting laughter throughout the cafeteria.
Before leaving, Julian leaned close to Evelyn. "Dominic values this project, but don't overwork yourself. If anything happens to you, he'd be devastated."
Evelyn warmed at his kindness. "I understand."
"Come to me anytime with work issues," Julian added before departing.
Evelyn watched him go, surprised by his transformation. The former clown had become responsible since New Year's, lightening Dominic's workload.
Olivia and Abigail immediately pounced. "The General Manager cares so much! Has the family accepted you?"
"It's complicated," Evelyn admitted, unconsciously touching her stomach. She hadn't revealed her pregnancy, not even to friends who'd restrict her work if they knew.
"Anyway, you're perfect for our CEO!" Abigail gushed. "With Dominic by your side, nothing can stop you two!"
Olivia analyzed: "The real obstacles are Reginald Blackwood and Beatrice Lockwood. But grandparents love babies - once you're pregnant again, Reginald will approve fastest. As for Beatrice... well, mother-in-law relationships are tricky. But you already have Alexander and Isabella - just live separately after marriage."
Evelyn smiled ruefully. "We'll manage. Abigail, your baby's due soon - any plans?"
"I'll raise it alone," Abigail said breezily, devouring spicy food.
Olivia's face fell, remembering her forced abortion. She lowered her head, heart breaking.
Evelyn instantly regretted her carelessness. "About the project designs - any initial thoughts?"
Olivia brightened, launching into ideas as Evelyn exhaled in relief. She'd spend a lifetime making amends to Olivia.
At 8:45 PM, Evelyn still worked on designs when her phone startled her.
Dominic's low, angry voice demanded: "It's late. Why are you still working?"
